Distance Learning & Online Engineering - Civil, Electrical, Mechanical Degree Programs
Engineering
An engineering education can be summed up as the best preparation for any career that requires critical thinking and analysis, with an emphasis on interpersonal skills. When deciding which Engineering degree to pursue, a student must weigh a hefty amount of options. The first and most important decision is deciding exactly what you want to do with this degree, which facet of engineering you want to get into. Every program will require a strong commitment from the student, as they can be some of the hardest classes out there. Although there are a ton of variations , the main three disciplines are Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical. Civil engineers plan, design, build, and manage the facilities that are essential to our everyday lives. These include but are not limited to bridges, dams and highways, the transit systems, airports, tunnels, and industrial and commercial buildings. Most view a Civil engineer as a problem solver, one that is charged with constantly meeting the challenges of a deteriorating infrastructure. A Civil Engineer would help solve problems involving traffic congestion, energy needs, natural disasters, and urban development or redevelopment.
If you were ever interested in building a car from the ground up, or taking apart your own car, maybe getting into Mechanical engineering is for you. Mechanical engineering is the most diverse engineering discipline of the main three with relevance in virtually every field and industry. Mechanical engineers are highly sought after, and may become involved in the design and construction of everything from spacecraft to toasters to life saving heart-lung machines and microscopic nanomachines. With such a vast knowledge base, a mechanical engineer can be found working in many different industries, all across the world. They may assume the role of supervisor, design products themselves, or conduct research and head up the development aspect of the business. Today's mechanical engineers look to accomplish their work economically and efficiently, and are required to have solid knowledge base in many aspects of sciences and mathematics.
The third of the is main three is the Electrical Engineer. This focus shares many similarities to Computer Engineering, as technology advances increase the likely hood that one can not be created without the other. As our everyday lives become more intertwined with technology, this discipline is fast becoming an all purpose course of study. An graduate of electrical engineering would be responsible for working on everything from a global positioning system that can pinpoint a car's location, to a giant generator that can power an entire city. As with all engineering careers you can expect to work both in an office setting as well as out in the field. The average salary for any engineer varies greatly depending on your discipline, and will range from 50-100k annually. Obviously the more experience and better education you have, the higher base salary you can look forward to.
