Distance Learning & Online Educational Technology Degree Programs
Teaching about the use of computers in the classroom as well as giving students the ability to learn the technology themselves is the goal of a program of study in educational or information technology. Graduates of the program will know how to integrate all the forms of multimedia presentations as well as computer technology into the classroom experience for kids or adults, depending on the level of student they will be teaching. Students completing a degree in educational technology will find employment as department heads, classroom teachers, lead teachers, support staff, technology consultants or service providers, or professional development staff within school districts.
There are a wide variety of courses offered in a degree in educational technology. As students advance through the degree levels the focus will shift from more general, broad based topics to very specific areas of interest and study. Most students will complete courses in networking, databases and database management, security of information transfer, wireless technology, local area network hardware and software, computer programming, computer applications and work on web design and internet teaching. Students will also become familiar with the common and advanced usage of common software programs such as the Microsoft applications including PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and other systems. Oracle databases and Java programming may also be included in the coursework.
While the program is very hands-on with students completing most projects and assignments using educational technology there is still a strong theoretical component. Basic education methodologies, teaching strategies and the use of current curriculum technology will be emphasizes in the program. Students will also learn to troubleshoot and problem-solve basic issues with the use of technology in educational settings. Graduates will be confident and comfortable in both using and teaching technology at whatever grade level or through any system the school may be using.
