Distance education is an excellent way for students to complete a basic or advanced level degree or certification without actually having to attend classes or a specific campus location. For many working professionals or even students that wish to work a full-time job and still continue to advance their education distance learning or distance education provides a great option. Typically distance education is complete either through mail-out courses or more recently through online classes and courses. The online format allows students to complete assignments, listen to lectures and even replay and repeat information as many times as possible whenever they have the time to study. This means that the classes are totally flexible, with no requirements to be logged on to the computer or the class at any specific time.
Some courses may be offered through internet seminars or real time streaming video. In this courses students may be required to log on for the lecture or they may choose to watch it at a later time or date, depending on the expectations for the course. All the equipment that students will need is an internet accessible computer and a monitor. Most textbooks are either available in an online format or they can be ordered online and shipped directly to the student.
Distance education classes allow the students to interact with each other and with professors and teachers through email, messenger systems or monitored chat systems that require passwords and specific software downloads. Students can complete certifications, associate level, bachelor level or even master and doctorate level courses online through distance education. In fields requiring licensure such as counselors, therapists, teachers or mental and health professionals examination and all regular requirements for professional standing will still be required.
