Distance Learning & Online Dental Hygiene Degree Programs

An associate's level degree in dental hygiene is an ideal choice for individuals that have already completed a diploma in dental hygiene and wish to enhance their skills and the tasks that they can perform as dental hygienists. Typically dental hygienists work under the supervision of a dentist to examine, clean and discuss oral hygiene with the patients. The dental hygienist in a small office with additional certifications may also complete tasks such as counseling patients in the use of various oral hygiene devices, completing tooth impressions for the dentist, taking dental x-rays, removing plaque and even working directly to apply protective covering to the teeth without direct supervision of a dentist. This advanced level of training and certification allows dental hygiene professionals to provide their own services independent of a dentist. Various states and areas have different regulations on the licensure and use of dental hygienists and this information is covered ! in the classes.

Classes are both theoretical and knowledge based as well as having practical applications. Classes address topics such as the study of dental disorders such as gingivitis, cavities, periodontitis, and bad breath. Structures in the mouth or dental devices such as retainers, dentures, bridges and braces and their impact on dental hygiene will also be addressed. Students will learn about record keeping, confidentiality and regulations regarding patient information, dental billing issues, dental office procedures, terminology and working as part of a care team for the patient will all be addressed throughout the program. In advanced courses the correct methods to complete x-rays, safety issues with regards to x-ray technology, the correct methods for obtaining dental molds and impressions and more direct patient services are all covered.

Since professionals in the dental hygiene field will work closely with the patients courses are also designed to help dental hygienists learn how to explain procedures to patients, work with small children and elderly patients, as well as how to deal with issues and problems should they arise.
