A degree specializing in curriculum design allows graduates to work as curriculum developers, writers, editors and professional development in-service training providers for the curriculum. Graduates may find work with school districts or school systems that are designing and implementing their own curriculums, in private sector scholastic publishing or textbook companies, in government agencies that monitor and govern curriculum development or as classroom teachers that have the ability to assess, evaluate and modify curriculum to meet the needs of the student's in their classroom.
A course of study in curriculum design will include classes on the various aspects of learning and how presentation of materials affects learning for different groups of children and adults. In addition issues such as gender, culture, age and even nationality affect learning and how to evaluate curriculum for any bias in these areas. Students will also have the opportunity to study and address the issues of technology in curriculum development, online trainings, programs and degrees, and the effects of different types of learning on overall retention of information. Students may also have experience in writing specific curriculum software or implementing other technology based types of learning in relationship with a particular curriculum.
Throughout the program students will develop an understanding of the laws and educational regulations regarding curriculum content, appropriate learning objectives and goals within a curriculum for various ages of children, as well as how to modify and adapt curriculum for gifted or special needs students. Some graduates may choose to further specialize in one particular curricular area such as sciences, mathematics, English, social studies or other area of prior expertise or experience. Technology based students may also choose to develop online trainings or web content curriculum for adult students or students in remote locations.
