Distance Learning & Online Criminal Justice Degree Programs

A degree in criminal justice is typically completed by students interesting in pursuing a career in law enforcement, corrections, as a district or county attorney, within the criminal justice system as an investigator, forensic technician or for those interested in a law degree as a prosecutor or defense attorney. More diverse careers such as security management, loss prevention professionals, private investigators and even professions wish to work as counselors, therapists or advocates within the criminal justice system will often begin their educational careers with a degree in criminal justice. Some courses are offered completely in an online format while others are completed in traditional classroom settings.

The choice of courses within the degree program varies as to the type of criminal justice degree being earned. Associate and bachelor degree programs will typically be more general in content while more advanced master and certification courses will allow students to specialize in particular areas of interest. Many students may choose to take a specialized diploma program in one area of criminal justice such as computers, forensics or crime scene management. These specialized diploma programs are usually completed by peace or law enforcement officers already working within the field of public safety or policing.

Classes within the criminal justice degree programs include law enforcement ethics, laws and procedures for apprehension, legal issues regarding search and seizures, crime scene investigation and management, forensic sciences such as fingerprinting and analysis, computer systems, computer forensic study, policy making within the criminal justice system and civil, criminal and appeals court processes. Students will also learn how to communicate effectively and work with victims and survivors of crime. Emphasis will also be placed on preparing the graduate to testify in court and understanding how to share information through written and verbal statements.
