Distance Learning & Online Court Reporting Degree Programs
There are several accredited court reporter programs offered throughout the United States that will prepare graduates for work in the fast paced environment of the court. Court reporters must be highly accurate individuals that have an excellent memory as well as above average skills in capturing words and accurately transcribing them to a tape, which serves as the record for the court proceeding. A court reporter will learn how to type at incredible speeds on a specialized instrument or complete real time translating services or close captioning to deaf or hard of hearing persons or others with special needs. Court reporters may also work in taking depositions, and providing transcripts of interrogations or meetings. Basically court reports are used anywhere that an accurate record must be kept of the proceedings.
More common today, computerized or computer assisted court reporting is becoming popular. Court reporting training will allow students to learn all the various methods of court reporting including computer systems and programs, type transcription, and using voice recordings to create the final transcriptions. Each method as well as the problems and legal issues that can arise from the use of the system will be addressed throughout the program. Students may work while completing their degree but typically cannot be employed in courtrooms until they have completed the degree and achieved certification. Typically requirements are that students can accurately capture 225 words per minute before they can be certified and licensed as court reporters.
Classes within the program of study for a court reporter include confidentiality and ethical issues and concerns, legal issues with regards to court reporting, legal terminology, court procedures and working within the legal system. Students will also learn how to control their emotions, work with highly agitated people, and understand courtroom policies and procedures.
