Distance Learning & Online Counseling Degree Programs

The degree program in counseling is very general in scope and allows students to focus on an area of interest. Counseling program typically start at a bachelor level with individuals not being able to gain licensure as professional counselors until they have completed a master level program and all the exams and internship hours required by the governing body with the state. Most states require a lengthy monitored period after graduation which may be up to three thousand hours of direct client contact after graduation.

Counseling programs allow those graduates that have an interest in working with people the opportunity to have a structured approach to working with clients. Courses will include substance abuse counseling, addictions, psychological testing, child and adult psychological development, abnormal psychology, human development and behavior, learning disorders as well as the structure and history of the development of the study of counseling. Students will take courses on effective communication, client and counselor relationships and ethical issues, legal and regulatory issues as well as federal and state laws that apply to confidentiality, patient treatment and other issues. While highly theoretical at first, classes gradually become more advanced as students progress through the degree programs. Some students may choose to go on to psychology or psychiatry degrees or to focus on the clinical or management aspects of counseling careers.

Job opportunities for counseling program graduates include positions as school counselors, mental health counselors, substance abuse counselors, or grief counselors. Some with this degree may choose to work in clinics, in private practices, or even directly for counseling programs in businesses, government agencies or crisis response organizations. Counselors typically have little difficulty in finding work and often have multiple options for career choices or changes. Advanced degrees offer more options that basic degrees and allow the professional to specialize in areas of interest within the workplace.
