Students in a degree in corrections will gain knowledge and understanding of all aspects of working within a correctional facility or working within the correctional system. This can include corrections officers, parole and probation officers, advocacy positions within the criminal justice or corrections system as well as management and supervisory roles with the field. Students will learn the theory behind the methods used in corrections facilities as well as the organizational structure, hierarchy and historical aspects of the field of corrections.

Classes and training within the corrections program can vary depending on the area of focus for the student. Typically courses will include management of inmates and use of force procedures, weapons and firearms training, policy and procedure training, suicide and suicide risk assessment and protocols, gang related courses, drugs and contraband, facility upkeep, juvenile crime and working with young offenders, counseling and basic psychology and human behavior classes. Some courses may also include legal and ethical issues, communication skills, self-defense training, emergency response and first aid within the prison facility. Courses will also teach students the correct responses to emergency procedures within the various types of corrections facilities.

Much of the program will prepare the students to work with criminals as well as how to maintain a high level professional behavior even in very stressful and potentially dangerous situations. Students will usually be taught by professionals in the field that will use real world examples of inmate behaviors and concerns and issues within the prison system. Students will also learn the various reporting and documentation, including the use of software and technology within prison facilities or corrections agencies. For those going in to parole and probation careers issues on counseling and working with offenders, reporting procedures as well as mental health and addiction issues will also be addressed in the classes.
