Graduates of a program of study in computer engineering can find employment in almost any business, service, industry or manufacturing company or organization. Very highly skilled computer engineers are responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance and overall troubleshooting and daily monitoring of computer systems within businesses and outside connection to the internet. Computer engineers use math, sciences and an in depth knowledge of computer technologies to ensure that businesses and companies are able to share information on internal connections or local area networks (LANs) as well as conduct business with the outside world on wide area networks or WANs. Since most business and companies have a high level of dependence on the internet and computers for daily production and services, a computer engineer is a key component of the workplace.
Courses in the degree in computer engineering will vary from traditional engineering courses focusing on design and development principles through to the highly specialized technology used in wireless and wired internet connections, networking and network security, upkeep and maintenance of computer equipment, basic programming and computer software knowledge or even advanced classes in computer languages, operating systems, hardware and software development or other specific courses of study.
The key components of the program will allow computer engineers to develop a strong foundation in theoretical computer knowledge and be able to apply it to the actual functions of designing systems, project management on the installation and implementation, as well as evaluating and monitoring existing systems. Many computer engineers work to improve the function and information systems used by the computer programs, networks or LANs within a company or business. Problem solving skills, logical and sequential testing, reporting and effective communication and leadership skills will also be included throughout the program.
