Distance Learning & Online Communication Disorders Degree Programs
Graduates of a program of study in communication disorders will be prepared to work with and assist students, children and adults that are experiencing difficulty in communicating with others. These conditions may be caused by genetic conditions, trauma or a psychological issue that is hindering communication. Often a professional in communication disorders will work as part of a treatment team, working with other professional such as physicians, mental health professionals or speech and language therapists or other therapists to achieve goals of improving client communication. Graduates may choose to work with one specific age group or with individuals that have specific types of communication disorders or they may provide general services regardless of the type or cause of the communication disorder.
Students that graduate from a masters level program in communication disorders may choose to complete licensure as speech therapists, language acquisition professionals, trauma workers, rehabilitation therapists or as private practice consultants or clinicians. Graduates with a medical degree may work in hospitals in emergency settings or they may work in reconstructive surgical procedures to assist with communication. Some graduates may also work in school systems working directly with students or providing professional development and assistant to teachers on writing and communication problems, technologies to assist students with communication disorders or even issues with dyslexia and central auditory processing issues.
Courses in the program of study will include language acquisition, brain development, auditory processing and testing, observation, anatomy and physiology, neurological study, procedures and techniques, phonetic processing and the study of child development, brain injury and the effects of trauma on speech and communication. Counseling courses as well as legal, ethical and regulatory issues will also be covered throughout the classes. Graduates will have practice in working directly with clients through mentoring programs and practical applications.
