A degree in clinical laboratory science will give graduates the ability to understand the concepts behind and perform the basic functions and work expectations within a hospital, pharmacy or health related laboratory. This may be a laboratory that tests tissue and blood samples, or in a medical or clinical laboratory that tests new pharmaceutical drugs, treatments or other aspects of the health sciences such as genetic or DNA testing. Individuals with a degree as a clinical laboratory technician (CLT) or a medical laboratory technician (MLT) will usually need to complete additional certification and training to do more advanced tests and practices within the laboratory.

Usually offered at a bachelor's level or above classes in the clinical laboratory science degree include topics such as preparation and testing of specimens, use and proper calibration of laboratory equipment, decontamination and sterilization procedures, evaluation and analysis of test results, verification tests, proper use and handling of equipment, appropriate reporting and issues regarding safety and safe management of samples and specimens. Students will also learn how to work with a variety of tissue and body fluid types, how to prepare various slides and presentations of the tissues or body fluids as well as how to ensure proper procedures are followed within the laboratory setting.

Students that graduate from the program will typically specialize in one area, but in smaller labs may be required to work in multiple areas. Chemical analists look for chemical abnormalities within the samples and often work closely with the laboratory supervisor and physician. Blood bank technologists work to type, identify and label blood samples both for donation and for screening. Microbiology technicians look for micro-organisms or biological contaminants. A cytotechnologist works to prepare tissue samples for screening for cancer or other tumors or growths.
