Distance Learning & Online Civil Engineering Degree Programs
The graduate of a program in civil engineering has gained the experience and skills to plan, develop, evaluate, monitor and asses the development of city areas including utilities, roads, development areas and physical space. This job typically involves working with large groups of people including local, state and federal lawmakers and political figures as well as public interest groups, developers, construction companies and other government officials and engineers. A civil engineer must be able to work well under pressure, enjoy working with people, and have a strong ability to communicate effectively both in public situations and in small and large group meetings and settings.
The classes in the civil engineering program involve topics such as developing and assessing infrastructure, residential and commercial construction and development, utilities management and infrastructure, public policy and regulation, state and federal regulations and the management of projects and developments in a sequential and logical fashion. While civil engineers do not have the final say in most city development they do prepare reports which form the basis of most decisions so appropriate research, use of various types of presentation technologies as well as an ability to express complex issues in easy to understand terms is addressed throughout the program.
As with all engineers a civil engineer will use computer technology and software to develop models and projections of new developments and construction. He or she must be able to use, modify and adapt various programs and software to meet his or her needs, as well as understand the various technology that will be needed to complete the project. An understanding of construction practices, costs and impact on surrounding area is also an important part of the training for a civil engineer. Most city civil engineers will have a master level degree but some may work their way up through the ranks with a bachelor level degree.
