Students that are interested in a career in art that involves bringing characters, settings and drawings to life via the internet, computer generated programs, or traditional animation art techniques will enjoy completing an Associates or Bachelor level education in the field of animation. The average yearly income in this sector of the art industry is approximately $37,000 per year for full time employees but those that choose to work on a project-by-project basis can earn significantly more as they gain knowledge. There is opportunity for advancement in both education and into management and project coordination and development positions with additional work experience and training.

A degree in animation will include courses in many different areas, not just specifically animation. Students can expect to take classes on two and three dimensional drawing and animation, movement, storyboarding, layouts, background design, basic computer programs and programs on working with various operating systems and software programs. The use of color, designing web based games and even computer programming may be included within the course of study. Students will also complete training in the use of special effects, multimedia use in animation as well as game design and animation in game development. Courses are designed to be both practical in application as well as allowing the student to learn the underlying theory. Cutting edge computer programs and industry standard programs will be used in classes to give students hands-on real world experience.

With a degree in animation at either an associates or bachelors a graduate can be hired as an entry level animator, story board designer and artist, video production artists, graphic designers, forensic artists and computer generated special effects artists. With additional experience and specialized training it is possible to find careers as project coordinators, managers or even as consultants.
