Distance Learning & Online Alternative Medicine Degree Programs
Alternative medicine may be a stand alone degree or may be combined with another medically related degree to provide both traditional and alternative options for treating patients and conditions. Alternative medicine is based in science and testing, but uses not traditional and typically non-chemical forms of treatment for patients. While somewhat controversial for some people, alternative medicine is a wonderful options for many conditions, symptoms and patients throughout the world. Alternative medicine professionals may find work with doctors, with community based health agencies or as consultants. Typically without a medical degree the graduate will be limited as to their direct patient treatment options but this will vary from area to area.
There are over five hundred different recognized sources or types of alternative medicine. These can range from spiritual and metaphysical healing through to the more standard herbal treatment and formulations that are even available through department and drugs stores. In addition practices such as some of the massage therapies, acupuncture, holistic medicine, yoga, specific diet and supplement routines and even physical routines and exercises can be considered alternative medicines. Students will typically focus on only a few of the various types of alternative medicines depending on their own particular style and area of interest.
Students in alternative medicine programs will study the science of the various alternative treatments from historical aspects to modern research and findings. They will also study various diseases, treatments and the current medical model of diagnosis used in traditional medicine. Most programs will also teach the holistic or "whole person" aspect of diagnosis used in most alternative medicine practices. Students will study the body functions, complications, issues and legal and regulatory considerations in using alternative medicine. Patient communication, basic management and legal issues with regards to client information will also be covered throughout the program.
