A degree in adult education will provide the graduate with the skills needed to teach adults or to provide educational opportunities to adult learners either in formal education settings or in professional development and workplace training. Adult education is usually a specialization of those that already hold a teaching degree or those that currently work as trainers or training specialists within an agency or organization. Most adult education courses are offered at the master level, however there are bachelor level adult education programs as well as higher doctorate level courses of study.

Students taking an adult education degree will complete courses in the area of focus such as mathematics, English, English as a second language (ESL), technology, science, social sciences or any other field of study or interest. All students will take basic courses in teaching practices, teaching methodology, issues with teaching special needs adults students, curriculum and instruction, supervision, ethical and legal issues in education and best teaching practice. Courses are designed to be practically oriented with the theoretical aspects being applied in assignment and class projects. Students will learn effective communication, various teaching modalities and the use of technology in the classroom for adult learners.

Graduates of the program may choose to specialize in one area of adult education such as online courses and online course development, adult curriculum and course development, research in adult education or as private training and in-service providers for specific companies or agencies. Many large agencies and government department hire their own professionals to train and upgrade the understanding of new and existing staff and a degree in adult education can be an asset to their career. Colleges, community centers and adult learning facilities also look for teachers specifically trained to work with adult learners to fill a variety of management and teaching positions.
