Savannah College of Art and Design
Savannah College of Art and Design’s mission is to prepare talented students for professional careers, emphasizing individual learning in a positive university environment. The goal of the college is to nurture and cultivate the unique qualities of each student through creating and maintaining an interesting curriculum in an inspiring environment under the guidance of involved professors.
The school was founded in 1978 by Paula S. Wallace, Richard Rowan, May Poetter and Paul Poetter. The school has undergone several expansions since its inception. In 2005 it added an additional campus in Atlanta, Georgia, and in 2006 merged with the Atlanta College of Art. The school’s Savannah location is especially scenic, with many buildings having been restored and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Besides being closely engaged in restoring the city, the school is known for its involvement in bringing the arts to the local community. Each year, several events are sponsored by the college including the Sidewalk Arts Festival, Savannah Film Festival, Fashion Show, SCAD Style, Art Educators’ Forum and Rising Star. These programs help students become more actively involved in the community and help the school engage people of all ages in the appreciation of the arts.
For students who cannot make it to the school’s two campuses, there are also a number of online programs offered through the college. Courses, certifications and degree programs from the undergraduate to graduate level are offered through the e-campus. The school’s online programs have won several awards including the Instructional Technology Council’s Outstanding Online Course Award in 2005 and the Instructional Technology Council’s Outstanding Distance Education Program Award in 2007. Students can choose from creative programs that include Broadcast Design, Digital Photography, Graphic Design and even Historic Preservation.
