Jacksonville University
Jacksonville University aims to take a balanced approach to higher education by combining the best attributes of liberal arts and sciences with professional skills and competency. The school promotes engaged learning through its curriculum in which students are challenged to take their own initiative in seeking out educational resources, learning opportunities, research and study abroad.
The university was founded in 1934 as William J. Porter University, which was a two year university. After moving to its current location on the banks of the St. Johns River, just minutes from downtown Jacksonville, Florida, the school became Jacksonville University in 1956. The school offers 7 different Bachelor’s degree programs in more than 60 majors as well as graduate level programs in Nursing, Business, Education and Orthodontics.
The school has been recognized for its graduate programs, ranking in the top tier of Southern graduate schools in 2006 in the U.S. News and World Report rankings. The school attributes its success to small class size, small student-to-faculty ratios, quality faculty and competitive admission prices. The school is perhaps best known for its aeronautics program which works in conjunction with Delta Airlines to help provide quality flight training to Jacksonville’s students. Jacksonville University also has respected Nursing, Dance, and Marine Science programs as well.
